Cancun Spring Break Adventures!

Saturday, April 6th

We are back from our big trip to Cancun! I am still trying to catch up from leaving our life for a week, but we had a lovely time - a much needed break! We got up in the middle of the night essentially Saturday morning to catch our 5am flight to Houston. We were a bit worried about how Adam would fare with the connection, but it didn't seem to bother him. He just needs to see some kind of progress happening - as long as we are leaving this plane to board another one, things are moving right along. Things were a bit hectic when we landed in Mexico. The airport was very busy and we didn't know how to find our shuttle right away. We were ushered outside, where it was very hot, and Adam was not a fan of that. He still had his pants and shoes on and he kept talking about his legs being wet. It took about 15 minutes to get on our shuttle, which felt very long:-/. Once we were in the air conditioned shuttle on our way to the resort, everyone felt a lot more relaxed (myself included!). Our resort was beautiful! We had to get into our swimsuits as soon as we got into the room, even though it was about 5:30 by that time. When it's 27 degrees Celsius, still very much swimming weather! We had our first dinner at the buffet and Lynsey and I briefly checked out the evening entertainment.  We didn't stay long, we needed to get to bed - what a long day!

Sunday, April 7th

We woke up to a windy, but still very warm day. We spent the whole day by the water - Lynsey and Nathan mostly by the pool, Adam going back and forth from the pool to the beach. We did get the kids checked into the Kid's Club for a short time while we talked to the Expedia guy about potential tours and booking our shuttle back to the airport. The kids didn't love the Kid's Club, but seemed to be okay there for a short time most days. Because it was windy, we did not feel our skin getting warm the way you normally would when you're getting sunburned, so we all got a bit sunburned that day unfortunately. Adam got away with the least sunburn thank goodness, he seems to be good at finding shade when he needs it! He was establishing a pretty solid routine, even starting on that first full day: breakfast, kid's club, swimming in the ocean, change into clothes, back to the beach to sprinkle sand, late lunch, pool, downtime in room before dinner, dinner, ice cream after dinner, back to the beach to sprinkle more sand, bed. His days were some form of this exact schedule almost every day - we knew resort life would be great for him and his love of routine!

Our room was overlooking the dolphin pool, and as suspected, Lynsey was in love with the dolphins from Day 1! Her and I checked out the evening show again that night and it turned out to be her favorite show, an acrobats show. Her sunburn bothered her quite a bit, but she was a trooper and tried her best to not let it spoil her fun!

Monday, April 8th

On Monday, the kids discovered the swim up bar, and didn't look back! They really enjoyed just being able to order whatever they wanted (this was very much a "yes" trip we decided early on!). Lynsey participated in this swimming pool game which was fun for her, I'm glad she was brave enough to join in:-). Nathan decided early on that he didn't want to go in the ocean so we had a hard time pulling him away from the pool onto the beach. We had this bucket of sand toys so I was able to convince him to do some sand castle building with me. We did have to split up quite often since Nathan and Lynsey had such a strong preference for the pool over the beach, but it was nice when we could all be there together, even if for a short time. The kids also discovered Chevy's Diner for lunch on this day, and we ended up eating there a lot - it was a lot of fun for them when they got to sit in the car! Another great day of sand and sun!

Tuesday, April 9th

On Tuesday, Brian got up early and left for the day to do a tour to Chichen Itza and some kind of sink hole. His pictures are scattered throughout the ones I took. He enjoyed the tour, glad he got a chance to go! Me and the kids hung around the pool for a bit in the morning, but it was sprinkling rain and Adam didn't like that. It was still warm so the rain didn't bother the rest of us, but Adam was bothered by it on and off. Late morning, that rain picked up a lot and so we had to make a mad dash for the room. By the time we were in the room, it was a torrential downpour! The cleaning lady was cleaning our room when we got there but the kids just sat on the beds. All of a sudden, we noticed there was a puddle of water by the balcony door - the outside balcony had filled with water, and the door was not sealed well enough to hold it in in such volumes! The cleaning lady was squeegying water out the front door as fast as she could but the puddle was just growing. Thankfully we didn't have any electronics on the floor! It took a while before the rain let up and the puddle subsided and she was able to dry the floor for us. The kids were quite content on the beds during this whole ordeal, I was quite surprised especially by how well Adam handled it. It was still raining when I convinced the kids to run over to Chevy's for lunch just to give us a break from the room. We didn't end up checking out any of the rainy day activities at the hotel, just went back to the room to hang out for the afternoon. Brian got home around dinner time and we went for dinner and dessert together. Me and Nathan and Lynsey went to the Enchanted Forest show in the evening and Brian took Adam to the beach for his nightly ritual - the sand was dry enough by then that he could sprinkle it again:-). We got the boys to bed and Lynsey watched them in the room so Brian and I could go have some drinks at the Margarita bar that night. It was nice to have some time just the two of us!

Wednesday April 10th

Wednesday was our best day weather-wise, which worked out really well considering the activities we had planned! After a brief Kid's Club visit, I took Nathan and Lynsey to the pool while Brian took Adam to the beach. The swim up bar did not get old, many Shirley Temples and Strawberry Smoothies were ordered this week! At about 11:30 we went over to the dolphin pool so Lynsey and Nathan could do their Dolphin Ride - they had a great time! It was a bit of a gimmick, as the dolphin ride itself is very short, but it was fun for them to be in the pool with the dolphins interacting with them. Nathan had been wanting to go to the taco restaurant for a few days but kept meeting with opposition from Lynsey, so I took him there for lunch just the two of us - we had a very nice taco lunch! After lunch, Brian took all the kids to the pool so I could have some beach time all to myself - it was lovely! They had these hammocks in the water that were so relaxing, I very much enjoyed my time to just lay on the beach and go in the water when I felt like it, no one to take care of but myself:-D. We had family pictures at 5:30, and of course getting ready for them felt very hectic. I never enjoy getting ready for family pictures, or taking them, and honestly this wasn't an exception to that. Adam was really upset at the start, and even sprinted away from us at one point, but he did calm down after a bit of a break. The photographer did a good job of rolling with the waves of our family and started taking more candid type shots instead of just posed ones. In the end I was pretty happy with now they turned out! It was a bit windy and we were a bit sunburned, but all in all not a bad photo session:-). We had dinner after and of course, dessert at the dessert place followed by some beach time. I took Nathan to the break dancing show in the evening which was so entertaining! I think I enjoyed it even more than Nathan haha. He liked it, but he was really tired.

This was of course our 15th wedding anniversary and we had thought we might go for dinner alone that night, but decided to celebrate the next night instead. Everyone was too exhausted after a full day!

Thursday, April 11th

Thursday was another great beach/pool day! Lynsey even came out into the water a bit more today, and her and Brian tried climbing the big white floaty thing. It was too tough for her unfortunately, I should have seen that it was really only adults that were making it to the top of that thing. Oh well, it didn't get her down! Nathan wouldn't get into the water, but he did seem okay to just sit on the beach and make big sand pyramids. Lynsey got to hold a toucan which was fun for her! We took the kids to Chevy's Diner for dinner, and all got to sit in the car which was fun. After dinner we went through the dessert and beach ritual, Nathan was really enjoying building sand pyramids at night! We got the kids to bed pretty early so Brian and I could go to the fancy adults only French restaurant for dinner. It was delicious! Definitely the tastiest restaurant there, the Creme Brulee was so yummy! Lovely end to a great day!

Friday, April 12th

Our last full day at the resort! We enjoyed the last day by having more drinks at the swim up bar, having more fun in the pool and at the beach, and enjoying dinner at what was our favorite restaurant as a family, Lorenzos. Lynsey and I also swam with dolphins! I had bought the tickets for hopefully Adam and I to do it, but it became apparent early on that Adam was not going to do it so I thought Lynsey and Nathan could just do it again. It turned out that Nathan didn't really want to do it again, so I did it with Lynsey. It was a lot of fun! I'm glad I had the chance to do it! I did not buy the professional pictures again so we will have to manage with Brian's phone pictures:-). Lynsey watched the boys again in the evening so Brian and I could go for a drink and a walk around the resort. We had to pose with the Cancun sign of course!

Saturday, April 13th

Time to pack up and head home! Brian took the kids to the pool one last time while I started packing up our room. We had to get on our shuttle at 10:45 so they had a nice amount of time to swim and say good bye to the resort (and the dolphins of course!). We got to the airport without any drama, the flight left a bit late but it wasn't too bad, we were still going to have plenty of time to make our connection. Well, in the air, we learned there was a weather issue so the plane had to take the long way around to get into the airport. This diversion plus the delay at the start of the flight meant we would be landing an hour late - we now only had about an hour and 20 minutes to get through Customs, get our bags and drop them back off again, go through security again, and get on our next flight. Things were very tight! We had hoped to eat before we got on the plane, or at least get food to eat on the plane, but we did not end up having time for that. This was unfortunate because we had to settle for the airplane food but they didn't have much left. We just snacked, we managed. Adam had another rough patch about 3 hours into that second flight again, but he did settle back in after about 20-30 minutes of feeling very sad - he just wanted the plane to land! Didn't we all! We got into Seattle on time and everything went very smoothly after that. We were home around 10:30 - it was good to be home!

Another great vacation with lots of memories made!
