Finally Spring Weather!

It's been a busy few weeks as we settled back into post-Spring Break life! I started subbing as a certificated teacher last week, my first two days being last Tuesday and Thursday at Horace Mann in the Learning Center. It was a great first assignment, the paras were so capable and flexible, and it was a great learning experience for me! On the Monday before, I job shadowed the Librarian at Horace Mann which was also really helpful - every time I watch someone else teach their class I feel like I get a level of comfort.

Easter weekend was pretty relaxed, Nathan had a Lacrosse game on Saturday and Adam had his horse riding lesson. Nathan played goal again for half the game and Brian reported that he did awesome! Almost scored a goal when he was in as a player, too! Easter Sunday was pretty relaxed, we went to church and did a small egg hunt for Adam and Nathan (as usual, Adam only really wanted to find like one or two eggs and then he was done). Lynsey hid the eggs and made Nathan's really hard to find, it took a little while! I had gotten a pasta maker on Buy Nothing, so Nathan helped me make some homemade pasta later. It was kind of fun, and not that much work actually. Not sure how often I will do it but it tasted really good so hopefully I get around to it every so often!

This week was probably one of the busiest weeks ever in recent memory. Monday afternoon I took my first regular classroom subbing job. My friend Joey is a 5th grade teacher at Wilder, and I saw on Frontline that he needed a sub for the afternoon so I texted him and asked him if he thought I could handle his class:-). He said he thought I could, so after the gym and a quick trip to the grocery store, I was off to my first real classroom subbing job! It was pretty fun actually! The kids were really great, and Joey had left things pretty well laid out for me to be successful. I'm glad I was able to start with a half day, although it may have given me a false sense of security haha! Volleyball in the evening was pretty fun, we had several more players! 9 players were there, and there is one girl on the roster that hasn't come yet, so we should have 10. Much better than 5!

The next morning, I saw on Frontline that Horace Mann needed a second grade teacher so I dived in! Exhausting day, whew! It was a bit of a rough start, the first lesson of the day was Math and I didn't really understand how to teach it the way the book outlined so I just winged it. The kids seemed to understand it, but it was supposed to take a whole hour and it only took 15 minutes. Oops! I did some reading out loud from a book the teacher supplied, had them do some of their own reading, and then rewarded them with a youtube video and a short game. The day got a lot smoother from there thankfully, I started to get the hang of it after a bit. Still, I feel like second grade is a bit younger than I really want to be at - I will be looking for 4th and 5th grade assignments from now on!

Wednesday was busy for the all the normal reasons, laundry, walk Jasper, piano lesson, gym, and take Nathan to piano. Normally I would have a bit of time after taking Nathan to piano to collect myself before driving him to Lacrosse practice and making dinner, but I had a subbing course from 4:15-6:15. It was such a helpful course! So glad I took it, very applicable. Brian picked me up at 6:15 and we were off to the Kraken game! It was a great game, the Kraken beat the Avalanche, woohoo! Busy day, but fun!

I took another full day subbing job at Clara Barton on Thursday, this time as the Music teacher. Totally different experience, as specialists have several different classes come in for a half hour lesson, so I basically did the same lesson 7 times over to different classes (modifying for different grades). It was sort of fun, I also learned things throughout the day that helped make the later classes a bit smoother. I feel like I am starting to figure this stuff out, although every new school and new class is going to be a bit different so it's always going to take some figuring out. I want to start taking high school jobs, but I don't really know how to get started. My plan is to email the office manager at RHS and let her know I'm thinking about taking some jobs but would love advice on where someone like me should get started. Hopefully she can help guide me to a good starting point!

I took Friday off from working (I was exhausted, phew!) and it was a good day! Got to catch up with Yelena in the afternoon which was nice. Today was a beautiful day, and Nathan had another great Lacrosse game! He scored his first ever goal, woohoo!! In the afternoon, Lynsey and I met with Jaqui and Ari in Duvall and hung out for a few hours - it was a great time!

The Oilers have clinched a playoff spot and I feel renewed optimism that "THIS IS THE YEAR!". The year for what, you ask? I don't know - not getting swept in the first round maybe? I actually feel hopeful they can win at least one playoff series, maybe even get to the THIRD round! I'm sure I'll be disappointed, but at this point I am still hopeful!
